14 Days of Love

Valentine's day is coming.

I found myself this year thinking more about how can I express my love for my family more than just the one day this month. I decided that it was going to be 14 Days of Love.

I began to search for things to do for and with the kids.  I found some great ideas that I want to share with you.

                              First:

I found some ideas about telling your kids each day what you love about them. I created little cards that have something we love about each of them and attached a Hershey’s kiss to the card.

Second:
I wrote 8 cards to my husband. Just things that I appreciate about him or things that I love he does for the kids and me.  On the other days I am going to give him a cute candy Valentine. I found a few Pinterest Ideas that you can check out. My husband doesn’t like chocolate so I was limited on some of the cute ideas. (I know not normal)

Third:
To keep Christ at the center of all things on Pinterest I found this Count Down to St. Valentines Day chain of scriptures.  I tweaked the topper a little, but the scriptures I kept the same. Here is a picture of the countdown and the link to the Count Down to St. Valentine.

 Fourth:
I found some cute recipes for snacks, breakfast and dinner. This year we are going to have a fun breakfast together and a nice dinner. I will take out the china for dinner, make the table look nice for this special dinner as a family.  Here is a link for some ideas on Pinterest .

I love this month because it makes us focus in on how we can tell those around us that we love and appreciate them. Take a minute to write a note to a friend or loved one. No one gets "snail mail" anymore and yet everyone still loves it!

Our greatest example of Love is Jesus. God sent His son, Jesus, as a sacrifice for us.  He died on the cross at Calvary because He loved us so much.  No matter the sin in your life, God will forgive you if you believe in Him and ask for forgiveness. May you know and find His love.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” New American Standard Bible (©1995)

Share with me what you do in your house or what you are going to do!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Mother's Love

Being a Mother is one of the most rewarding and, at times, thankless jobs, but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I adore my children and am humbled daily at what a precious gift from God each of them are to me. I have had amazing examples in my life of wonderful mothers including my own.  My Mother's greatest gift to me was knowing that she will always love me and teach me that our Lord Jesus will always love me.

If I can express that to my children...that I will always love them, and then pass on that God will always love them no matter what... would be a great accomplishment in my life.  A Mother's love is like no other and I'm thankful each day that God has given me the privilege to be a Mother. May this weekend be filled with joy, love and remembering your Mother, grandmother or those who have influenced you and have blessed you in many ways.

Mother's Love
There is no love, like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother, when she gives birth.

A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.

God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one...
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.

When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.

Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

Take time this weekend to say how much you care to those special women in your life and remember those who are no longer with you!

Teacher Appreciation

Teacher Thank You © 2009 Cameron Blazer

Romans 12:7 “If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.” (NLT)

Teacher Appreciation is quickly approaching. This year it is the week of May 7-11, 2012, Day: Tuesday May 7th. I was a teacher for ten years in public and private schools and while a teacher I received some amazing gifts that said Thank you. But I am only one person and as I began to look for great ideas I explored Pinterest and other sites and it was overwhelming. I love Pinterest and look all the time but I thought I would get some more personal help.
I emailed a bunch of my friends that are former teachers and just some creative moms to weigh in on either the best gift they ever received or gave a gift that was a big hit. Here are some of there responses.

·      Gift Cards: Visa so you can spend it anywhere

·      Have the teacher fill out a sheet at the beginning of the year with their interest, hobbies, favorite stores, favorite foods and favorite things. This way that can help the moms when they want to get you something you sure are to enjoy.

·      One year our PTO turned the teacher's lounge into an Italian Bistro.  They waited on us like any fancy place would. The menu was excellent!

·      Gift Cards that are useful, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, Target, Bookstores, and for me I love Starbucks so that is a treat for me!

·      “I think one of my favorite gifts was getting one of those boards where you can slide pictures or notes between the ribbons. The parent had put little gift cards all over it. Such as $5 to Wendy's, $10 to Panera, $10 to Barnes and Noble, etc.  I thought it was an awesome idea!  I still have the board on my fridge!”

·      Basically anything you could eat, burn (as in a candle), or spend.

·      SIMPLE...just a handwritten note/card from my students telling me that they are grateful to have me for a teacher:)

·      I always enjoyed a great gift card. I have received from Macy's, Lands End, Barnes and Noble, Panera Bread, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks and more. Stores you can get "teacher clothes" from are always nice. Restaurant cards were nice too. Even if the gift card was for $5 it was wonderful!!!!!!! I think supplies are nice too. Like stickers, pens, pads of decorative paper, etc.. Teachers spend a lot of their own money to provide for their classroom.

·      A beautiful hand made nativity set made of origami (the dad that made it was actually in jail at the time, about 25 years ago!!!) it was very cool.  It was all white made of like thin tag board so it was strong.  I also got a set of needle point Christmas ornaments with Christian symbols on them.  A framed saying "teachers touch lives forever" from a student who died of leukemia 2 years later (I still have that one hanging up).  When I get ornaments from students, I always label them with their names and think of them if I use them each year. Of course food was always appreciated, especially once I had kids.

I like getting hand santizer, hand soap and candles (practical stuff). I talked to a teacher yesterday whose fav gift was a basket of books for her classroom....each handpicked by a child in the class.  Our class made a basket of school/classroom supplies for the teacher.  Starbucks gifts cards.

Skip to my Lou is a great place for creative crafts and ideas. Back in 2008 they posted a list of ideas to show appreciation to the teachers at your child’s school. The link is below and a list of ideas.

Place a large poster in the Teacher’s lounge that says, “We think you are ‘souper’!” and serve a soup lunch. We do this for our teachers on a day that there are no classes but they are required to be at school— like for parent teacher conferences or an in-service day. We place little notes in the box ahead of time inviting them to the special lunch. Parents are asked to send a crock pot of soup so the cost for this is very little.
Late fall or winter place a basket of hot cocoa mixes, instant flavored coffees and spiced cider packets in a basket with a sign that says, “You warm our hearts!”
You can ask parents to donate homemade breakfast goodies and invite the teachers to “A breakfast of champions!”
Supply the teacher’s lounge with cupcakes decorated with lots of pretty frosting and post a sign that says, “Our teachers are the icing on the cake!” or make cakes and have the sign read, “Our teachers take the cake!”
Place a pack of gum in each teacher’s mailbox and say, “You’ve chewed through 1/2 the year. Keep up the good work.”
Place a Power bar in each teacher’s mailbox and a note saying, “We hope this energizes your day.”
Place some store bought tins of flavored popcorn, homemade caramel corn, or packages of microwave popcorn in the teacher’s lounge with a note that says, “Have a popin good day!”
Have the student council or a group of parents wash the teacher’s cars or only car windows. A few days before let teachers know you are planning to do this by putting a note in their mailbox that says, “Thanks for making everything ‘clear’ We are treating you to a free car wash!
Make a sign that says, “Our teachers are the sweetest.” Have parents bring in sweet treats or provide a chocolate fountain and fresh fruit.
Hire a few massage therapists that will come to the teachers lounge and do chair massages. Usually massage students are willing to do this for a reasonable rate. Let teachers know about this special treat by sending them a note that says, “You deserve a pat on the back!”
During parent teacher conferences we put boxes of of conversation hearts in each teacher’s mailbox. We included a note that said, “Hoping your ‘heart to heart’ conversations are sweet!”
Conversation hearts or any other heart candy could be placed in the teacher’s mailboxes with notes saying, “Thanks for putting your heart into teaching.”
At Easter put candy filled plastic eggs in the teacher’s mailboxes with a note telling them they are ‘Eggstra’ special teachers.
Put a lottery ticket in each teacher’s mailbox with a note saying, “We are lucky to have such great teachers!”

“What nobler employment, or more valuable to the state, than that of the man who instructs the rising generation.”

"One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child."

Through the Cracks

I have been putting this entry off because it is so personal but after various times of prayer and different sermons and devotionals I have been reading I have felt led to post it now. So here it goes:

A few weeks ago my husband and I took an 8-day cruise to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. It was a wonderful time. I have to be honest that prior to leaving I went through a very hard time. The two months before our trip I went through a tremendous amount of guilt that weighed heavy on my heart. I was feeling guilty for leaving my kids for that long and for asking someone else to look after them for an entire week. After all it is my job as their mom at this point in their lives to take care of their every need.

I was feeling guilty about being away, relaxing and “having a good time” when someone else was taking care of my two little ones.  I allowed Satan to reign in my thoughts and I let him feed my guilt so that it became all consuming.  At one point we even discussed canceling our trip.

I mean at this point in our family’s life we are living with my in-laws while we are in search of purchasing a house.  The thought of asking them to do even more than what they already have been doing became unthinkable.  And, asking my parents to stop what they are doing to take off work and watch my kids was crazy.  All of this so that I can go relax, sleep in, eat dinner without interruptions, read a book, spend quiet time with the Lord and enjoy so many moments with my husband was beyond what I could handle.  Honestly…it kept me up at night!

The big problem was that I allowed Satan to reign. The week before we left I was getting various lists together and writing down schedules for the kids, I stopped and broke down.  I actually had a few breakdowns, including one in front of my dear friends. During those times I expressed my feelings and as my friends and husband tried to reassure me that “it was OK” and that “we needed this”…it still didn’t help.

Three days before leaving, I got down on my knees alone in the bathroom and cried out to God. I should have done this the first time these feelings started to set in. I asked God to meet me, to take away these feelings and to help me to embrace this time with my husband.  I asked Him to help me see the special moments my parents were going to have with them and to help me understand that my in laws were only going to have them for a short while and that I needed to let go and ban Satan from my thoughts. And you know what...He met me. He met me!!!

Yes the feeling was overwhelming and He answered.  He always does. I felt a fullness that all was going to be fine and that it was OK to relax. My mother told me that the kids were going to be fine and that she was nervous but excited to spend this time with them. Suddenly I realized that someone else wanted to take care of my kids with a willing heart and love on them just like I try to do daily.

God is always with me and He never forsakes me.  He takes care of my every need. Sometimes I just need to ask.  He is so patient, gracious, merciful and He knows my every move.  He is for me, and He will never forsake me in my weaknesses.

Satan is the master of deception and he loves to find the openings to slip through so that he can spread the doubt, guilt, sadness and undeserving feelings. He feeds on that and when we let the cracks appear he loves it. We need to be free of those cracks and filled with the Holy Spirit so that we are living for Christ, dwelling in Christ and filling up with His word.

In retrospect, this trip was absolutely amazing.  I definitely missed my kids, but I knew that they were fine, that all would go well and that they would quickly forget how long we were gone.

This experience has confirmed one important thing for me.  That God is so much bigger than I sometimes think He is and that He cares for us more than we could ever imagine.  Even in the small things.  We need to avoid filling our minds and hearts with things that lead us away from Him and instead, commune with Him. In our weakness we allow negative feelings to overtake what is important and it keeps our focus away from Christ and what fulfillment He has for us.

I am so far from perfect and I make mistakes all the time. And yet He loves me. He works on me and He challenges me to be what I am created to be for Him…to worship Him, seek Him and live for Him! I don't always get this right but the moments that I do I am reminded of this truth and I continue to strive for what makes life worth living.

The cruise was time for renewal, refreshment and quality time with my husband. We love spending time together and during the trip we spent very little time apart.  I am so blessed to be with a man that sees me for all that I am and continues to love me.  I see glimpses of Christ through him!  And yet, Christ loves even more and wants even more of me (and for me).

So yes, the trip was important and much needed. Taking that time to be away and invest in your marriage (and yourself, in my opinon) is crucial for your relationship and I strongly recommend it. If not for a week, take two days to find that renewed strength to keep going for yourself, your husband and your children.  You will be a better wife, mom, friend, daughter, woman.  I’m sure of it.

Above all, find moments to be with Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in you so that you, me, all of us may experience the richness and fullness of Christ because Christ can break any barrier!

Romans 8:2, 5-6
"2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death.
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. God Loves Us

One of my favorite praise songs to reflect how God loves us: He L
How He Loves Us
By David Crowder Band

He is jealous for me, Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden, I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realize just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And oh, how He loves us so
Oh how He loves us,
How He loves us so

He loves us,
Oh how He loves us,
Oh how He loves us,
Oh how He loves.

We are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If grace is an ocean, we're all sinking

So Heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don't have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way

And oh, how He loves us
Oh how He loves us,
How He loves us so

Yeah, He loves us,
Oh how He loves us,
Oh how He loves us,
Oh how He loves.

Smile

There are days that seem like they last forever and then there are days that fly by and you are getting the kids ready for bed. Today was one of those days that felt like it was not going to end and my kids gave me a few moments of pure joy to make it through. Their smiles today made for a worthwhile day.
As I began to write this post I was thinking "what is a smile?" So I looked up the definition of a smile and Webster says: a facial expression in which the eyes brighten and the corners of the mouth curve slightly upward and which expresses especially amusement, pleasure, approval, or sometimes scorn a pleasant or encouraging appearance.

Then as I searched the web I stumbled upon a few other things. There is a World Smile Day and you can check it out at this website. http://www.worldsmileday.com.

However, the one thing I stumbled on that made me stop for a moment was finding Operation Smile. It made me pause and consider how the impact of a smile can influence a child and change their life. Below is about Operation Smile and their website if you haven’t heard of them and would like to be apart of there work check them out.

About Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org) Our Mission: Operation Smile mobilizes a world of generous hearts to heal children’s smiles and transform lives across the globe. Founded in 1982, Operation Smile, headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, is a worldwide children’s medical charity whose network of global volunteers are dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults. Since its founding, Operation Smile volunteers have treated more than 150,000 children born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities and the organization currently has a presence in more than 50 countries. In addition to contributing free medical treatment, Operation Smile trains local medical professionals in its partner countries and leaves behind crucial equipment to lay the groundwork for long-term self-sufficiency.
Here is a great song to listen to by Uncle Kracker,SMILE

I compiled a few pictures of the smiles that make me get up each day and thank the Lord for my blessed life and beautiful children.
